About the role
Enviro Recruitment are working with an Ecological Consultancy based in Greater Manchester who are looking for a candidate who fits their values and vision and will become an invaluable member of the ecology team.
They are seeking a senior technical leader to drive the expansion and development of the ecology department. This is a strategic role for an experienced ecologist who can combine deep technical expertise with strong commercial acumen, leading key client accounts and shaping the future direction of the ecology team.
You will oversee quality assurance across all ecology outputs, line-manage senior and junior ecologists, and play a central role in business development — identifying new opportunities, building relationships with developers and planners, and expanding the consultancy's ecology footprint across the North West and beyond.
The consultancy works on a variety of projects, from householder applications, large scale residential developments, renewable energy, commercial schemes and minerals and waste applications.
Job Roles:
• Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for the ecology team.
• Lead the expansion and development of the ecology department, including recruitment and resource planning.
• Oversee quality assurance on all ecological reports, PEAs, EcIAs and protected species licences.
• Manage key client accounts and lead on fee proposals, project bids and commercial negotiations.
• Mentor and develop senior ecologists, consultants and junior staff.
• Maintain and develop relationships with Local Planning Authorities, statutory agencies and professional networks.
• Represent the consultancy at industry events and contribute to marketing and business development activity.
• Undertake complex protected species surveys and licence applications at a senior level.
Job Requirements:
• A degree or equivalent in an Environmental Science subject, with significant post-qualification experience.
• Minimum 5 years' proven experience in a senior or lead role within an ecological consultancy.
• Natural England Bat Level 2 Licence and experience writing Bat EPSLs.
• Proven ability to manage and develop a team, with experience of line management and staff mentoring.
• Excellent client-facing skills and a strong track record of winning and retaining work.
• Comprehensive knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy and Biodiversity Net Gain.
• Membership of CIEEM at Associate or Full Member grade (or equivalent).
• Own car and ability to drive long distances for work.
• Ability to stay away from home for short periods (1–2 nights) for work throughout the UK (hotel expenses paid).
Salary from £45,000 per annum, with higher salaries available for exceptional candidates.
